RESULT AND CONCLUSION

 

A series of hard copy printed photographs are presented in Fig.4 corresponding to the variations of the moire pattern. The fringes of the moire pattern are obtained by our new image processing algorithm. Our approach is to select a region of 33 times 33 mm size from the center of the moire pattern for interactive analysis. Although the moire pattern itself is a contour map, it is necessary to display and compute the three dimensional figure of the variation of the profile of the target. So we subtract the height of the original profile of the target to give a graphic description of muscle motions in whole field. This can help to observe the slightly muscle motion despite a small rigid body motion exist.

 

The results of image processing of locally muscle pulsing are shown in Fig.5. The display is printed out by our special software and the laser printer connected to the computer. The scale of the height of muscle movement is up to times 100 magnification. We can see a relative movement( a traveling wave, not a standing wave, for no knot point is observed) exists in the case of monitoring muscles impulsion in a long time steady standing condition.

 

The major advantages and limitations of our optical system can be listed as follows:

 

1. The system is sensitive to the testing target. If we use a 2 lines/mm phase grating, 10 degree viewing angle and analyze the fringe phase variations by 8 bits gray level segmentation, we can expect a one-direction high accuracy (pm 0.05 mm) and large area (the measuring range of 1000 mm^2.) measuring capacity. Although this system can change the spatial frequency of the phase grating and viewing angle to adjust its resolution, but it is still not suitable for large scale displacement measurement.

 

2. No contact is required for measurement and a full field result is obtained. However it is only selectable out-plane measurement and not suitable for in-plane displacement measurement. When the curvature of an object is too large will bring the fringe order judgment error.

 

3. It is economical and easy to find all the optical components to set up. But the arrangement of set-up location and viewing angle, the calibration testing must take much time to perform the measuring system.

 

The discussions here were simple in an attempt to verify the feasibility of observation muscle pulsing by phase moire system from the view point of Chinese convention medicine, but it would need more labor to analyze. The behavior of the muscle pulsing may reveal the health conditions of the digestive system; cardiovascular system; nervous system in a human being. The help of this measurement system will give more understanding about the behavior of muscle pulsing. The application of the moire auto-measurement of the muscle pulsing is very interesting and should benefit for the research at Chinese conventional medicine.
